Musical production of the year: students bring ‘The Wizard of Oz’ to life
Every year, there is one production that allows the magic of acting, singing, and dancing to bring characters to life on the stage. This year, the theatre department will produce “The Wizard of Oz,” the musical created by Mervyn LeRoy. This year is also the 75th anniversary of “The Wizard of Oz.” When deciding on what musical to produce, this was taken into consideration. This musical brings a whole new attitude to the theatre program, one that “spells” magic.
“We didn’t have a lot of stronger singers,” producer and drama teacher Joel Kaczmarczyk said. “We have good singers, but not enough to carry a chorus of kids.”
Kaczmarczyk goes on to say that Oz has a lot of characters who have the ability to “fake sing,” meaning the singing can be exaggerated with the voice.
The cast has been working tirelessly to get the show ready for opening night. Everyone stays after school for about two hours a day.
“I’m very excited to work with the cast and the behind the scenes crew,” senior Cynda Molina said. “Everyone is excited for the production and is working very hard.”
Taking notice of the cast list (on the right) a lot of the parts are split up. This was a tricky decision made by senior directors Renee Mozal and Keaton Barbes, in conjunction with drama teacher Joel Kaczmarczyk.
“We wanted to give more people the opportunity to have a part,” Mozal said. “It also worked out in this case because it would be difficult to transition make up and costumes with any single character throughout the play. This makes it a lot easier.”
“I’m excited about the fall musical,” principal Thomas Lietz said. “Mr. Kaczmarczyk does an amazing job and the kids have a lot of talent.”
With the diligent work from the cast, everyone is confident that this show will be a success. Some of the cast members even went on to say that this show will do better than the musical performed last year, “High School Musical.”
