“Walking Dead,” “Breaking Bad,” “Orange is the New Black,” and “Friends.” On Netflix the possibilities to watch every episode of a show is alluring. Spring break offered an opportunity to spend countless minutes and hours binge watching popular shows from the first episode to the bitter sweet finale.
“I once watched all 10 seasons of ‘Friends’ in two weeks,” junior Jenna Johnston said. “‘The Office’ is another one of my favorite shows to watch on Netflix.”
Those who did not head to a tropical island or Florida found binge watching a relaxing activity over spring break, after a long 10 weeks of school work. As more and more shows are added to Netflix, more and more teens are excited to hit play and relax. Netflix rose from a movie renting business in 1997 to a massive streaming service that offers everything from movies to shows and series.
“I watch ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ on Netflix,” senior Megan Baranski said. “I usually go through six or seven episodes a night.”
Netflix is relatively cheap at only $7.99 a month. According to CNN.com, Netflix has about 57.4 million subscribers world wide, and had earned $1.48 billion in revenue for 2014. Huffingtonpost.com offers some interesting facts about the massive streaming company, like the fact that Netflix was almost called Blockbuster.com, or that Netflix employees can take as many vacation days as they want. Netflix has over 76,000 categories, some of the more interesting categories include “Cool Mustaches” and “Dark Canadian Thrillers,” but there are many others even stranger.
“My favorite category is comedy,” junior Joshua King said. “My favorite shows are ‘Reservoir Dogs’ and ‘Trailer Park Boys.’ I usually watch them after school.”
For kids who are loaded with activities all day during the week, Netflix is reserved for the weekends. Teens who watch Netflix on the weekends are sure to know the phenomenon described as “binge watching.” According to Oxford Dictionaries, binge watching is defined as watching multiple episodes of a television series in rapid succession. npr.org considers finishing entire seasons in one weekend as an addictive behavior, there are no known health drawbacks to binge watching.
“I can watch a whole season in one day,” sophomore Arlene Carver said. “Last week I watched four seasons of ‘Criminal Minds.’”
Netflix is also great for cheap dates. Food and a romantic movie can make or break a new relationship. Whatever way you enjoy Netflix, it’s an opportunity to get together with friends, spend quality time with family, or to rest your mind by yourself. While you choose movies or shows, take a step back and chooses a movie from the 1980s or earlier. Those classics can teach many important lessons and morals from the past.
