“As I walked up to the big gym doors, I dreaded finally seeing all my hard work come to life. I kept thinking, ‘What if the streamers fell down?’ and ‘What if the lights stopped working?’ But the second I stepped into the gym, everything lit up. All of my hard work came to life. I spent hours setting this up and now it is even better than I ever thought it would be. Everyone was jumping and dancing; it was electrifying. I just knew my senior homecoming would be the best one yet.”
This was senior Gabby Boskovich’s experience as the student council president, who set up and ran the homecoming festivities and dance. “For weeks, I, and the rest of student council, spent hours upon hours planning homecoming,” Boskovich said, “so it was amazing to see it all come together and everyone have a great night.”
Before the anticipated homecoming dance, students can look forward to a week full of activities and preparation, starting with the voting of homecoming court. As seniors received an email urgingthem to vote for homecoming court, it was a big decision for many. “I had to make a choice on who I was going to vote for,” senior Jordan Jones said. “Eventually, I knew based off of who was running and who wasn’t.”
The seniors who were voted onto the court were both surprised and thankful for this unexpected
honor. “I ran for homecoming court as a joke, but I’m glad I got on it,” senior Layan Hassan said. “It was
a fun experience and now I have the motivation to win.”
“I was so excited when my name was announced on court,” senior Sarah Fromm said. “I ran on the field right away; I was just so happy to be on the court with my friends and wear the sash all week. I advertised myself the week before on social media to convince people to vote for me, and I’m so glad it worked.”
Emerging victorious was senior Gabby Vansimaeys and senior Hector Cholagh.
“I was really surprised I won,” Vansimaeys said. “I had to double back because I did not think I was going to win. I was happy to be on court with my boyfriend, but disappointed that he didn’t win. I still had fun, anyway.”
Cholagh felt similarly.
“I wasn’t expecting it, either,” Cholagh said. “If anyone was recording me you would’ve been able to see my face of disbelief. My friends congratulate me in the hallways all the time and that’s was when it started to feel real.”
This year’s homecoming theme, Masquerade, allowed for many new opinions from students to emerge. Senior Jordan Jones, Vice President of student council, was one of the first to receive the news of the upcoming theme.
“When given the theme of this year’s homecoming, I already had an idea of what I wanted the gym to look like,” Jones said. “I thought of maroon, gold, and other rich colors.”
“I really liked the theme,” junior Jocelyn Penokie said. “I thought it was different and I liked the colors.”
The student spirit week revolved around the theme, which many students took as an opportunity to be creative with their outfits.
“I love spirit week and go all out every time,” senior Adiaelizabeth Catarino said. “My favoritething to do is go to Party City beforehand with my friends and plan my outfits for the week. My favorite day this week was decades day, when I decided to dress like I was in the 90’s.”
“Sometimes I worry that I don’t have things needed to make my outfits for spirit week look good,” junior Bianca Bakiu said. “But I always try my best to show school spirit, because I think its fun.”
Students attended the Masquerade Ball on Sept. 16, after a long, anticipated wait.
