The lions 2023-24 season has come to an end after losing in the NFC championship game to the San Fransico 49ers, 34-31. The Lions ended the season with twelve wins and five losses in the regular season, and 2 wins and 1 loss in the playoffs.
“We should have won that game easily,” senior Leo Paulus said. “We made a few mistakes late in the game, which ultimately cost us a chance at the Super bowl.”
Although a tough end to the season, the Lions 2023-24 season was very successful, making it to the playoffs, first time since 1991, and making it to the NFC championship game.
“I think we had a very successful season,” sophomore Thomas Kesto said. “It would have been great if we made it to the Superbowl, but we exceeded expectations and improved a lot from last year.”
The Lions were projected 9.5 wins coming into this season, exceeding expectations with a 12-5 record. The Lions first major win was their first game this season, against the Kansas City Chiefs on the road, after that game the Lions took off and never stopped.
“I believe next year we will go to the Superbowl, and win the Superbowl,” senior Anthony Gammo said. “I believe we will get better in the draft and sign big name free agents to help us compete for the Superbowl trophy.”
The Lions will have some tough decisions to make in the draft and free agency, many of the players may not be back, and the team will look for better talent.
“I think we need to sign a new edge rusher and a cornerback,” Kesto said. “I think if we get those players, we will be favorites for next year and hopefully rebound and make it and win the Superbowl.”
During the game, the Lions were up 24-10, in field goal range, and decided not to take the field goal and instead go for it and not be successful. Many fans and commentators did not agree with the call of going for it.
“I liked the call of going for it,” senior Chris Dickow said, “The whole year we were going for it, and it was successful, so why not try to get a touchdown instead of a field goal to go up 31-10 possibly.”
Although a tough finish, the Lions had a very impressive season, exceeding all expectations and bringing hope back to Detroit fans that they are a new and improved team.
“I’m excited for next season,” sophomore Alex Shaba said, “but this is the first time I’m actually interested in it, watching the playoff game was very exciting and knowing we made it far in the playoffs, we can perceiver and run it back.”
