Vintage cameras make a comeback

Vintage cameras are surging in popularity again with the ‘vintage look’ becoming more desirable.

Film, Polaroid, and digital cameras are making a comeback. Even though everyone has a high-tech camera right in their pocket, many people are looking for the vintage look and feel these older cameras give off. Some even enjoy the fun of the wait on a film camera, the suspense of seeing what pictures turned out and what did not when they get them developed.

“I have a film camera. I got it a while ago and I use it all the time” senior Grace Jenkins said. “I love how it feels to have a physical camera instead of just your phone that you always have on you. I also am obsessed with the look it gives your pictures. There’s something so much more authentic and touching about pictures that were taken on an actual camera”

Digital cameras are coming back just as much as film cameras. Many students even like the feeling that using a digital camera gives them, something a phone just cannot replicate.

“In some ways I like the digital camera for the vintage look it gives off” junior Dreyden Jackson said. “However, I really like the digital camera because of the vibe it gives off and it feels to use it compared to my phone”

Some students have opted to use apps on their phone that simulate a digital camera, like the app Lapse. Lapse allows people to use their phone while still getting that vintage look. Lapse also makes users wait a few hours for their pictures to ‘develop’ to keep along with the film camera theme of the app.

“I use Lapse to get a more vintage look. I think it makes the photos look cooler” senior Addison Stuehmer said. “Because I don’t have a digital camera, Lapse gives it that affect and it makes it easier to download the pictures rather than having to download them from an actual digital camera. I think I would still use Lapse even if I did have a digital camera just because it is convenient, even though a digital camera is more candid, Lapse is more efficient”
