As the years go on, I see more and more people wearing long dresses to homecoming, but what happened to tradition? It has always been that short dress are for homecoming and long dresses are for prom.
Some may argue that it is tradition for upperclassmen to wear long dresses, and while that is true, that is still upheld in my original statement. Only upperclassmen are invited to go to prom, and that is where long dresses should be worn. So, even with this argument, my original statement is still upheld.
Short dresses are also more fitting for homecoming because of the causality. Short dresses are more casual while long dresses are more classy. Just as homecoming is a much more casual event than prom. Prom is held in a banquet hall while homecoming is held in a gym. Prom is upperclassmen only and has a multiple course dinner. Homecoming is for all students at that school and is just a bunch of kids jumping around.
Wearing a short dress to homecoming is also more practical. There are hundreds of kids squished into a small gym bumping into and stepping on each other with no regard for that 300 dollar dress you bought. Long dresses get trampled and ripped at homecoming. Short dress, however, cannot get stepped on because they do not go down as far.
Long dresses are overall just more expensive. They usually cost hundreds more than short dresses. Long dresses also come with having to pay extra for hemming most of the time. While short dresses do not coming with excessively long trains or extra fabric that needs to be removed.
In addition to having to hem long dresses, they are near impossible to walk in. I know I much rather be comfortable and mobile when I am trying to dance. I do not want to worry about tripping and falling on my dress in front of the entire student body when I should be having fun with my friends.
