Health and Human Services academy students traveled to the Detroit Zoo for an educational trip.
“The reason we went on this trip,” freshman George Madison said, “was to learn about different animals and animal medicines.”
In addition to completing team building activities, HHS students also participated in educational activities focusing on the animals.
“We dissected a stuffed otter,” freshman Alexa Thomas said. “We had to take the coins outside of it and stitch it up.”
The freshmen split up into two groups, and they each participated in a hands-on activity.
“My group had to dig up bones,” freshman Nikita Bretz said, “and we had to figure out what happened to the animal. That was my favorite part of the trip.”
Freshmen Leah Jolley and Samantha Seroka also agree the digging up bone’s activity was their favorite part of the trip, although freshman Maya Strzelczyk said otherwise. “My favorite part of the trip was seeing the penguins,” Strzelczyk said. “It was the most exciting part.”
Many freshmen said they enjoyed seeing the penguins as well.
“My favorite animal that I saw were the butterflies, one of them flew onto my shoulder,” freshman Ariana Durt said. “The weather was sunny and warm, and it wasn’t to hot.”
The freshmen agree the weather was just right for a day at the zoo.
“I really enjoyed seeing the monkeys,” freshman Nicholas Barno said. “Those are always my favorite to see at the zoo, they make me laugh.”
The freshmen saw a variety of different animals during their time at the zoo.
“I might be interested in working with animals in the future,” freshman Emma Matovski said, “maybe doing things like stitches and using tools.”
Matovski was the only freshman interviewed that said she would possibly want to work with animals in the future, while the rest said they preferred working with humans.
The freshmen academy learned about different animal medicines, how to do stitches on animals, how to identify an animal by its bone/fossil and saw many interesting animals on their educational trip to the zoo. Students said they are looking forward to their next group trip and projects, too.
