If you want to show the world what you are capable of, what better way to show off than at Utica High School on the big stage. On February 7th, Utica held its annual talent show, which showcased various types of performances, including singing, dancing, and a band.
The show was directed by senior Carley Davis, theater director of Rock of Ages, with the assistance of teacher Jeremy Sloat.
“Nobody else was taking the lead to run it,” Davis said. “I didn’t want to go a year without doing the talent show, so I took the initiative to run it.”
Auditions were held on January 31st and while an abundance of students were eager to sign up, only a total of 10 performers were able to audition and were admitted.
“The audition process was relatively simple,” sophomore Samantha Householder said. “You basically just went on stage and performed your act in front of the directors.”
On Friday night, under the bright lights, the audience gathered in the auditorium to watch the highly anticipated performances and support their family & friends.
Some performers had more than one act in the show, such as senior Caitlyn Seal, who sang, “Part of Your World” From the Little Mermaid. She also danced to “Honey Honey” by ABBA.
“It was nice and a little scary, being on stage,” Seal said. “But when your onstage, you can’t really see anyone’s face, so you feel like you’re up there by yourself.”
The talent show, although full of, was not free of surprises. In Seal’s Honey Honey performance, the music cut halfway through, and so the audience and stage members had to sing it for her.
“She did very good,” sophomore Eleanor Jungwirth said. “It must have been hard for her to dance.”
The very last act of the night was a band performance which the largest group of people, including a guitarist, a bassist, and a drum player.
“I learned to play the bass because my friends were in the band,” junior Alexander Malseed said. “I was so excited to be on stage, I felt like jumping around.”
The talent show was a wonderful experience for both the performers and the audience. The welcoming and encouraging crowd, along with the passion contained in each performance made the evening more enjoyable and memorable for all.
