AI is used because it tends to be more descriptive, faster, and it offers explanations and reasoning for answers that are better than what a basic Google search provides.

Teachers and students at Utica High School tend to use AI to do their homework, assignments, and work when they are in school or at home, so how do they use AI?
“Sometimes I use AI for homework and editing essays,” junior Emmalyn Kasperek said. “I have not been caught but I have been scared of being caught so I never copy and paste assignments from there.”
AI is short for Artificial intelligence, which most people don’t actually know.
“I use AI sometimes for work and personal reasons, I don’t mind if students use AI as long as their using it in a proper manner such as getting ideas and then adding their own information,” teacher Melissa Kevonian said. “I don’t consider proper usage of AI such as copy and paste as that’s just straight plagiarism; I have caught many students using AI and the result is always a zero.”
AI gets its information from searching multiple search engines and combines all the results and putting it all into one answer, however AI is not perfect, it sometimes can give inaccurate information.
“I use AI however not often though, but when I do use it, I like to ask it complex questions,” junior Natalie Campeau said, “but no, I don’t use it for school related things to avoid plagiarism and in case of inaccuracy.”
Some Popular AI search engines that are used are ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini, and Google Bard.
“I like to use AI to make quizzes, for example I put all the verbs in French and used Chat GPT to form a quiz quickly to test how it works, it puts the verbs in random order is a big time saver for me,” teacher Susan Doyle said. “Obviously, I want them to write their own sentences in French and can tell when they use AI to cheat, based on how the sentence looks, They do not receive credit for work not done on their own, There are a few times that I allow students to use AI, such as in my AP French class, where I encourage them to use it for spontaneous speaking in French.”
“I usually use AI for Personal things and Chemistry work,” sophomore Avery Cox said. “I use it for chemistry because the beginning of chemistry is hard for me to understand and I think it helps me understand the concept of it better, I haven’t gotten caught using AI.”
AI and its usage are growing more popular at Utica High School, with both the teachers and students, as they use it to do stuff such as personal things, getting ideas, help in a class, and work.
