Many interesting classes are available at Utica High School, including the Food and Nutrition class. This class, taught by teacher Amy Merlo, is about keeping your body healthy and the effects of proper nutrition. Along with that, Food and Nutrition has food labs every Friday. This is an opportunity for students to use the information they have learned in the class to make the food of the week.
Sophomore Cynthia Najjar expresses her daily excitement for the class. “I really look forward to this class because it’s a very calm and fun class,” Najjar says. “I love being able to get in groups to bake all kinds of food and especially eating it after.”

Najjar enjoys this class as her last class of the day and loves the hands-on experience she gets baking various types of foods. Ending her day in a class where she can work with friends in unique ways like cooking is relaxing after a long school day.
A different perspective, coming from the teacher herself, believes that the food labs are not only about fun, but about teaching students how to make an easy and nutritional simple meal.
“It’s a great way to have the kids engaged in our work while also learning step by step how to make the easy meals,” Merlo said.
As the year goes on, the Food and Nutrition class cannot wait for the new meals and desserts they get to create and eat.
