The debate team is looking for additional members to participate in their upcoming debate topic, pharmaceuticals. Debate is open to any students at Utica and doesn’t require any prior experience.  The team meets on Wednesdays and Fridays after school in room 215. The team is coached by Lacie Smith, the foods and nutrition teacher at Utica.

“Mrs. Smith has made it super beginner-friendly,” senior Eddie Yago said, “especially since the team is so new.”

Although the club is new they have done very well in the two competitions that they have competed in. Tournaments are held on most Saturdays. In the upcoming weekend, the team will head to The University of Michigan for a huge tournament.

The club is a great way for students to learn how to be professional and persuasive speakers. The ability to speak publicly is a handy tool to have when getting ready to head into the work force.

“Our new topic starts next week,” Yago said. “It’s a good opportunity to start and learn the ropes.”
