Students with over 10 absences are already facing the consequences of the new attendance policy.

“I’m on credit review. Mrs. Olsen called me to her office and informed me,” junior Samantha Baber said. “She told me that I had ten absences and that I’d need to make up the credits through Saturday school.”

Saturday school takes place in the ECC for three hours.

“I only had to do Saturday school once, since you go for three hours and each hour takes off one absence for the semester,” Baber said, “We basically just sat there and did homework.”

Some found themselves on the brink of credit review.

“I was almost on credit review due to absences,” junior Nathan Wunschl said. “Most of my absences were sickness-related.”

Students have mixed feelings on the policy.

“I think that the attendance policy is sort of fair,” Baber said. “I would change the maximum number of absences to fifteen, or no limit.”

Others disagree.

“Some absences are out of students’ control,” Wunschl said. “I think fifteen to twenty absences would be acceptable. There shouldn’t be no limit though, since then it’d be easy for students to not worry about it and get behind in classes.”
