Utica High School kicked off its annual Chieftain Charity Week Nov. 10-14, a time dedicated to giving back and making a positive impact on the community. Students and staff came together to raise money that benefits the Humane Society of Macomb. The school spread awareness and supported important causes like giving back to the shelter through fun events and friendly competitions, like the Money Grab, the Coin Stall and the charity baskets. The energy around the building was high, as staff and students worked towards a common goal.

During third hour on Nov. 13, students took part in a schoolwide money grab to collect money for charity. Freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors all competed to collect the most donations, running from class to class and trying to beat the other grades.
Sophomore Ethan Lesner was the student collector for the sophomore class.
“We had a couple of classes where we knew where the sophomores would be, so it was a great advantage. I would love to do it again next year,” Lesner said. Lesner and his partner Mario Odo ended up raising the most money, bringing in over $160 in 15 minutes.
Representing the senior class was seniors Zoey Desmond and Daniella Kashat.

“It was really fun and a great thing to do for charity,” Desmond said. Many seniors felt the same, enjoying the chance to help while still having fun.
Freshmen Kenlee Anglin and Abigail Jett said that, even though there weren’t many classes with freshmen in them, they were still happy with how they did and are proud of their effort.
“Even though we came in last place,” Anglin said, “it was still a lot of fun to run around and raise money for charity.”
Overall, the money grab was a fun and positive event that brought staff and students together while raising money for a good cause.
