The Sophomore-Senior Program (SSP) went shopping at the Clinton Township Meijer and wrapped presents for 60 children on Dec. 10. The team gathered lists from three local families and the Macomb Community Children’s Giving Tree. The students and teachers raised money and did fundraisers with a lot of help from the Clinton Township Meijer to spend over $3500 in gifts for people less fortunate.
SSP member Senior Kylie Newcomb was involved in both the fundraiser and the team-building activity they did afterward. She had the opportunity to also get gifts for children in need.
“We had sophomore and senior students donate five dollars towards the fundraiser to help buy gifts. We had a total of $3500 raised, with Meijer donating $3000. This gave us a good budget to get the gifts through the Macomb County Children’s Giving Tree,” Newcomb said. “I was excited to pick out one of the angel tags with a young girl who wanted a scooter and a coat. It felt so good to give back to the community.”
Delighted to give, SSP member Isabella Blanchett worked alongside Newcomb and other club members to make this event happen. The charity is what made this fundraiser so meaningful for her.
“The whole day was an adventure. We ended up shopping at 7:45am and shopped for all the families in need,” Blanchett said. “What we did was so important because we are doing something for the less fortunate. Giving back will always have a place in my heart because no one deserves not to have a Christmas, no matter what circumstance they may be in.”
All of the SSP members got an opportunity to get some community service and give people of the community their own personalized gifts. For those who’d like to help spread the holiday cheer, the Macomb Community Children’s Giving Tree is accepting donations until Dec. 23. More information on how to donate can be found on the Shelby Township website.
