Many high school students don’t use their lockers as much as people might expect. People think it’s a waste of time and not a good thing to put in schools anymore. There are many different reasons why people don’t use their lockers; it really all depends on the person.
For senior Evyn Kelly, there isn’t enough time to get to her locker and back to class, especially with a locker that’s far. With most of her classes by the choir room and her locker by room 205, it makes it extremely hard for her to go to her locker and make it back down, even more so with the hallway traffic.
“I don’t use my locker because it’s a waste of time and we only have six minutes to open the locker, get all your stuff, and get back to class,” Kelly said. “That’s especially hard if you’re halfway across the school from your class.”
At Utica High School, lockers are still in every hallway, but most students don’t really use them anymore. Freshmen get excited about them at the beginning of the year, but that usually fades fast once they realize everything is digital and way easier to carry in a backpack.
“I only use my locker for my coat and if I don’t have a coat then I don’t use it at all because my backpack is way easier,” said junior Michela Crivella. “It takes less time, especially if I must walk from by the choir room all the way back to the medical science hallway.”
Locker usage in the past few years has been less and less. However, there are certain lockers that are used, such as sport lockers. People who play sports have a lot more belongings than those who don’t, so it makes it easier for them to put some things in their sport lockers.
“I use my sports locker every day. It’s bigger and fits more stuff for my sport—it’s a lot easier to use than the hallway lockers,” senior Donovan Jarboe said.
Although sport lockers are used more often than people think, lockers are becoming outdated and most students don’t see the need of using the lockers in the hallways. The athlete’s lockers are the lockers that get used on a day-to-day basis.
